Juneteenth, celebrated on June 19th, marks the day in 1865 when enslaved people in Galveston, Texas, were informed of their freedom—more than two years after the Emancipation Proclamation was signed. It is recognized as the oldest nationally celebrated commemoration of the end of slavery in the United States and has grown into a celebration of African American culture, freedom, and achievement.
